Everyone’s had the thought.
Whether you’re a high school football player, a doctor, a writer, or anyone else on this earth. You’ve had the thought.
What if I just threw in the towel and gave up? I did my best. Wasn’t that good enough?
Sure it is, if you’re a quitter.
But, personally, I’m not. However, I’m still plagued by the same doubt time and time again. That voice in the back of my mind whispers those ominous words, “what if you gave up?”. But what if you truly did give up? Have you thought of that?
You might think no one would notice. I mean, who cares whether or not you spend hours of your day writing? No one will even notice if you quit.
But someone will.
Did you know that Jane Austen stopped writing for a whole decade? She even put Pride and Prejudice in a drawer for a time. Can you imagine if she never pulled that novel back out? One of the most popular works of fiction. . .was almost not finished.
(If you’ve read the book, you know that would have been a tragedy indeed.)
“But this doesn’t apply to me because my book isn’t going to amount to anything!” Is probably what you’re thinking right now. But the truth is, it doesn’t have to amount to anything to be valuable. All it has to do is matter to one individual. One human being. And suddenly, it’s the most treasured book on earth.
I want you to do something. First, what is your favorite book? It might be several, that’s okay, just pick one or two that have meant something to you. They’ve changed you since reading them. Now. Imagine if those authors had never finished writing them.
What if they had given up?
What if they had stuck that book in a drawer or thrown it in the trash and never taken it back out?
If your favorite book means anything to you like my favorite book does to me, then I know you are horrified right now.
But let the reality of that sink in. Because right now, in your own little corner of the earth, you think that no one cares about your writing and maybe, at the moment, not a lot of people do. But someday they will. Someday, someone is going to pick up your book and suddenly all other books will pale in comparison to it. Just like your favorite book did to you.
I know it’s hard. Writing is hard. But, my friend, that doesn’t give you any right to give up. God has given you this talent, this gift, to use wisely and for Him. He didn’t ask you to give up, He asked you to press on.
So, the question is, what are you going to do?

Your turn!
Have you ever been tempted to quit? What did you do in that instance? Do you believe that one day your book will be loved?
Blessings, Allyson

Wow! Beautiful! I love what you said and my heart! What if Pride and Predjudice had never been finished…that’s a horrifying thought.
I am complete horrified by the thought that any of my favorite books would not be here…that would be sad.
I have wanted to quit many times, that nagging in the back my head gets to me…but my sisters have always encouraged me to keep going! It means a lot to me that my stories mean something to them.
Thanks for sharing! I love this!

Thank you!! Yes! I know, I can’t imagine Pride and Prejudice not being finished!
I know exactly how you feel. I have so many favorite books and I’m horrified by the thought of any of them not being finished. They have all impacted me in some way and, with some of them, I wouldn’t be the person I am without them.
I think we all want to quit at one time or the other but it’s what you do with those feelings that matters. That’s so great that you have sisters to encourage you like that!! I should’ve added that, that having people around you is so encouraging and helpful! For me it’s my best friends, I would quit time and time again if it wasn’t for their constant support and encouragement. I think every writer needs someone like that in their life! 💙

I know I wouldn’t be who I am without books I’ve read…there are some books that got me through some pretty rough times. Yes, God has blessed me with some great younger sisters and some awesome (virtual) friends! Having people around to encourage you definitely helps! I wrote more last year, after getting involved in the blogging community, than I had in a while!
Amen! Everybody needs an encourage someone in their corner cheering them on!

Agreed! Books are so powerful! (I love them so much!! XD)
That is so great!! I can totally relate! I was never very consistent with my writing at all until I joined online writing communities, made tons of writing friends, and even started a blog. It all has helped me so much in my writing journey and I can’t imagine writing without those tools!

Thank you for this, Allyson. I found this post via Joelle Stone’s blog, and I’m grateful I did. It is an encouragement.
To answer your questions… yeah, I’ve felt like quitting. Two of the things that keep me going are 1. I love writing. Like, I love writing so much. It has the attractiveness of a hobby, the attention from me of a serious activity. 2. NF’s music. NF is a popular Christian rapper I love who started out life in a not-great place. He raps about how he created music as therapy. And how in high school when he’d tell people that he wanted to be a rapper they’d laugh or smile. And now he’s made it. He has incredible quality music, and even though his music is clean, real, and kinda Christian, he’s gone mainstream (I’m not quite sure that’s a good thing or not… but that’s beside the point). So his music is really an inspiration of what someone can do with God’s help.

You’re welcome, Daniel! I’m so glad it was able to bless you!!
I love your answers!! Yes, we’ve all felt like quitting but we need a reason to continue. Whatever that might be – it’s different for each person. I can totally relate with your first reason! I love writing so much that even though I have thoughts of quitting I could never imagine actually doing so! That is so great that NF has inspired you! That’s amazing what he’s doing, I love that story! And that is so often true in the writing world as well that no one thinks you’ll make it and that, in turn, plagues you with feeling of doubts. But we have to press on. We have to remember stories like that and know that with God on our side no one can stop us! Thank you for this reminder!!

Wowww what a powerful post!!! Thank you for writing and sharing this!!! I definitely needed to hear that today. And no I can’t imagine PAP not being finished – the thought is too awful! I was so surprised when I heard about that a few months ago. I can’t help but think of when/if authors or would-be authors did throw in the towel and give up – what masterpieces might have been that never were revealed or finished, you know? All that is to say, this was SO encouraging and thank you again!! 😀 ❤

Thank you so much!! I’m so glad it blessed you when you needed it! I totally agree with you! PAP is a masterpiece and a great inspiration to writers! (And if the book had never been finished then the movie would never have been made and I love the movie SO much!! XD) That’s such an interesting point to add! I know there must be several such cases of masterpieces that never saw the light of day because of the writer’s doubts and fears. That’s a very sad thought. Again, another great reason to not give up, to persevere, and fight the good fight!

You are preaching to the choir. Yes, you won’t believe the number of times I’ve felt like throwing in the towel (along with all my manuscripts and a few pens just for good measure). But we aren’t quitters!! Quitting is the easy way out, and since when is anything worthwhile ever easy?? Amazing post, girl!
